Talking of music, my mother-in-law gave me The Beatles 1 album for Christmas. I think it’s great because you can follow the band’s musical journey all the way from Love Me Do through to The Long and Winding Road on one album. It’s amazing how their music developed over the years while still retaining the distinctive Beatles signature.

I think the jump from, say, ‘Love Me Do’ to ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ to ‘Get Back’ is both phenomenal and fascinating. I really like Lennon but I think McCartney has the edge (just!) as a songwriter. Not only melodically but also with his lyrics: I know Lennon has the harder image/reputation but I think some of McCartneys lyrics are fantastically grim/sharp/near poetry. ‘Eleanor Rigby’ ‘Penny Lane’ and ‘For No One’ I particularly like. ‘1’ is a great career overview, I definitely agree.
